Philippians 3:8-9

In this week's devotional, Colby reflects on Philippians 3:8-9, emphasizing the importance of knowing Christ Jesus above all else. He explores Paul's message to the Philippians about not relying on personal achievements or adherence to the law for righteousness. Instead, Colby encourages us to recognize that our righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not our own works. This realization frees us to engage in good deeds out of love for God, rather than as a means to earn favor. Colby invites us to meditate on this scripture and embrace the true source of our righteousness.

Devotional Reading

Title: Righteous Through Faith

Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:8-9 (NIV)

"Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith."

Reflection:

In Philippians 3:8-9, the Apostle Paul reveals a profound truth about our relationship with God. Paul, who once took pride in his strict adherence to the Jewish law, now considers all those accomplishments as worthless compared to the joy of knowing Christ. His transformation highlights a crucial lesson for us: our righteousness is not achieved through our own efforts or adherence to rules, but through faith in Christ.

Many of us may be tempted to measure our worth or spiritual success by the good deeds we do—such as tithing, evangelism, or daily Bible reading. However, Paul’s message challenges this mindset. He warns us against relying on our works to gain righteousness and encourages us to understand that true righteousness comes from faith alone.

This is liberating news. It means that our standing before God is not based on our ability to perform or our religious activities but on our relationship with Jesus Christ. This freedom allows us to live out our faith with a heart full of love and gratitude, rather than out of obligation or a desire to prove ourselves.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the gift of righteousness through faith in Christ. Help us to let go of any reliance on our own efforts and embrace the freedom that comes from knowing You. May our good works be a response to Your love rather than a means to earn it. Guide us to live in a way that glorifies You, reflecting the true value of our relationship with Jesus. Amen.

Action Step:

Spend some time this week reflecting on Philippians 3:8-9. Consider how your understanding of righteousness through faith changes your approach to good works and your relationship with God. Let this truth transform how you live out your faith daily.
